The weather in Sri Lanka is pretty warm & humid (and our furry friends are noticing it bad). It's probably a good time to be thinking about ways we can help keep our pets cool.
A microchip is a glass bead about the size of a grain of rice which is implanted between an animal’s shoulder blades.
It contains a radio transmitter, an antenna, and a computer chip with a 15-digit code (ISO chips). The information contained in a microchip has to be read by a scanner -- it is not a GPS system that will allow you to track and locate your pet.
As a standard practice in live animal transportation, you could familiarize your pet with the travel crate she will be traveling in a few days in advance of the trip. You must also reduce the amount of food you give your pet prior to the actual flight to avoid any potential gastrointestinal distress and help keep the travel crate free from waste. The primary concern during flight is adequate water intake to maintain proper hydration.

Australia amended certain changes to its import policies which will make it easier and less expensive for pet owners to bring their dog or cat Down Under. Effective February 3, 2014, pets are subject to reduced quarantine (30 days to 10 days) if they have a Blood Titer Test (RNATT) done between 6 and 24 months prior to entry. This will reduce costs for quarantine, much less time spent away from our pets.
There is another important change to the rules for pet import to Australia. Dogs and cats originating in non DAFF approved countries can enter Australia through an DAFF approved country as long as they meet the regulations to enter the approved country. No longer must pets reside in the approved country for 06 months prior to entering Australia.
You will still need an Import Permit and your pet will need a 15 digit microchip and veterinary health certificate. There are also vaccination requirements and tests.

There are two new rules for puppies entering the USA
1. Canine Disease Centre (CDC) is about RABIES effective August 15, 2014 states the puppies must be given a rabies vaccine at 12 weeks and the earliest puppies can enter the USA is 4 months unless there is a pre-approved Confinement Agreement issued by CDC.
2. USDA new rules - Puppies can not enter the USA before 6 months of age effective November 2014. Please read the following exemption which includes personal pets, etc.
This rule does not apply when there is no transfer of ownership or control of a dog to another person for more than de minimisconsideration after the dog's importation into the United States. Therefore, dogs imported by a person who will use the dog as a personal pet, for sport, for shows or competitions, or for breeding or semen collection are not subject to the 6-month age restriction or any other requirements of this rule. Additionally, we do not consider dogs imported for training as working dogs to be imported for purposes of resale. Thus, the rule will not apply to puppies imported by legitimate training organizations for the purpose of training the dog to be a working dog.
Effective on December 29, 2014, there will be a new regulation involving changes to the popular pet travel scheme governing pet movement throughout the European Union (EU). Whether you live in or are visiting the EU next year, these changes will affect you. Here is the abbreviated version:
EU Pet Passports: The passport issued to EU residents will be changing and will be provide for more identification of the pet. This change will not affect visitors to the EU.
Border Inspections: EU countries will be required to provide for inspections of pets crossing borders at certain locations. The EU may not be as laid back on ground controls.
Minimum age requirement: rabies vaccination for puppies, kittens and ferrets entering the EU will be administered no sooner than 3 months of age. This requirement is meant to prevent the movement of puppies and kittens who have been vaccinated too young in an effort to comply with regulations.
Commercial Movements: If you are traveling with more than 5 pets, unless you are traveling to a pet show or competition, you will need to use a licensed agent and enter the EU through an approved Border Inspection Post. The movement must also be registered on the TRACES system which tracks the movement of animals entering and traveling within the EU.
Unaccompanied Pet Travel: when entering the EU by air, if you cannot travel on the same plane with your pet, you must sign a declaration that you are not selling or transferring ownership of your pet. Additionally, you must travel within 5 days of your pet’s transport. This regulation will raise a lot of questions from pet owners who, for whatever reason, cannot travel with their pet.
Definition of Your Pet: Your pet must be a domesticated dog, cat or ferret. Wild animals, Savannah cats or wolf hybrids are handled through the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency.
